I opened a bottle of 1986 Chateau Lafite over the weekend and it was corked!!!! I have never been more disappointed with a bottle of wine. Great wine, great vintage, great condition and it was bad.
Has this ever happened to you?
I wish all wines came with a twistoff top!

Last Saturday's Groundhog Day festivites reported that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Which in short, means six more weeks of winter. Well, if the rest of winter is anything like the weather we have had this week, we'll take it! Let's hope Mother Nature is on vacation for the next few weeks.

2006 Viognier
The Viognier (pronounced VEE-on-yay) grape is gaining a foothold in Virginia’s vineyards and wineries. Viognier has its origins in the Northern Rhone appellations in France. Corcoran Vineyard’s 2006 Viognier is characterized by its aroma of honeysuckle blossoms and flavors of crisp white peaches with cantaloupe and honeydew melons. Fermentation in neutral oak barrels and tank aging accentuates the fruit flavors and spicy finish. Our Viognier is 100% dry but is often perceived to have some sweetness because of the intense fruit character of this grape. The classic pairings for this wine are Maryland Crab Cakes or spiced shrimp.

Today's Tastings -- September 29, 2007

Today's wines are from Spann Vineyards. Nestled among the majestic coastal redwoods of the Mayacamas Mountains lies the steeply-terraced mountainside property of Spann Vineyards. These idyllic Glen Ellen vineyards yield small amounts of richly flavored Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese grapes. Peter and Betsy Spann craft limited quantities of European-style wines that reflect the masterful blends and techniques of Bordeaux, the Rhone Valley and Tuscany.

Spann Vineyards 2006 Chardonnay-Viognier -- Although this is a blend of 59% Chardonnay and 41% Viognier, it's the Voignier that takes center stage in this white varietal blend! This wine combines the voluptuous dried apricot and honeysuckle aromas and flavors of the Vionier with the apple-crisp acidity of Chardonnay to create a richly textured, well balanced wine that is both foods friendly and incredibly refreshing. All of the Viongnier and 1/4 of the Chardonnay was barrel fermented and aged in neutral French oak for 6 months, while the remaining 3/4 of the Chardonnay was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks.

Spann Vineyards 2004 Sonoma County MO ZIN -- A blend of 60% Zinfandel, 27% Mourvedere and 13% Petite Sirah, this wine has a dark garnet color and ripe aromas of blackberries and raspberries. On the palate, flavors of dried currants and lush black fruit combine with a top note of rose petals. The luxurious mouth feel is complimented by big, well integrated tannins and a subtly spicy finish. Aged 18 months in a mix of French and Hungarian oak barrels. So when you run out of Zin, get MO ZIN! 90 point ranting - International Wine review.

Span Vineyards 2003 Russian River Valley Syrah - An opaque, dark ruby in color with aromas of blueberry and plum, this wine features rich flavors of stone fruit - particularly black cherry and plums - wrapped in a lush palate of big, yet supple tannins and nuanced oak. A blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Grenache, it was aged for 28 months in a neutral French oak barrels. 88+ point rating - International Wine Review

Spann Vineyards 2004 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon - This "Left-Bank", Bordeaux-style wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. An elegantly structured wine with lush mouth feel, it exudes powerful aromas and flavors of cherry and black currant. Aged for 20 months in 1/3 new, 1/3 two-year old and 1/3 four-year old French oak barrels.

Spann Vineyards 2004 Sonoma County MO JO - A complex, multi-faceted Super Tuscan blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignojn, 23% Merlot, 20% Sangiovese, 8% Syrah and 3% Cabernet Franc. This full-flavored wine was aged for 28 months in 1/3 new, 1/3 two-year old and 1/3 four-year old French oak barrels.

Today's Tastings - September 22, 2007

Oberberger Pinot Gris -- full bodied Pino Gris, slightly earthy. The Oberberger winery specializes in Pino's. Nice wine to serve with fish or chicken or to simply enjoy.

One Last Kiss - Alsatian blend. Slightly swee blend of Chardonney and Symphony grapes. Pair with lighter protein as well. Nice with pork!

Bibich Matran Grenache 2005 -- from Croatia grown on 40 year old vines. Fruit forward with a dry finish. Recommended with grilled foods. You can easily pair this with roasted meat, cheeses, or game.

In Zinerator Zinfandel from Sonoma Valley, CA. Nice spicy Zinfandel! This is a new introduction to the Northeast. You don't want to miss this wine if you like Zinfandels.

Hans Fahden Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma Valley as well. Fruit forward with a little chocolate, dry finish. Rich dark flavors with velvety tannens that reflects and defines intense characters of the mountain fruits.

Today's Tastings -- September 8, 2007

La Slina Gavi 2006 -- light crisp white wine. Cortese grape with no oak (all stanless steel finished). This vineyard is located in the Piedmont of Italy.

D&N Chianti Classico -- wine is made by Andre Fossie under this label. D is his father's initial and N is his son's initial. Grandfather and son were born exactly to the day 100 years apart. Nice classic chianti wine Sangiovese with a little bit of Cannaiolo and Malvasia grapes.

Verbena Rosso di Montalcino -- 100 percent Sangiovese. Aged one year in oak. Creates a nice earthy with bright cherry fruits.

Moscato d'asti by Vietti -- wonderful bright dessert wine. Frizzanta! Lightly sparkling. This would be a perfect wine for a evening under the stars.
